Callum Ilott has said he believes he is in a “very good position” should an F1 opportunity come up.
Ilott is the reserve driver for Alfa Romeo this year, alongside Robert Kubica, whose Orlen sponsorship gives the team a lot of funding. He was the F2 runner-up in 2020, but did not graduate to F1, nor did he have the finance to continue in F2. He drives in the GT World Challenge Europe this season for the Iron Lynx Ferrari team but does believe he could find himself in F1 if the stars align. More than that, he is happy to see Yuki Tsunoda’s and Mick Schumacher’s current performance.
“Yuki made a great impression in Bahrain – it was really good to watch, actually,” Ilott said.
“So from that side, it was a good benchmark to say, ‘look, here’s what one guy can do’. With Mick, we all know that he takes a bit of time to get there. But once he’s there, he will be good. And you can already see the pace is getting better.”
“I think they’re doing a good job, and I think it’s only a matter of time before the reference is even closer. And it’s easier for me to say, ‘well, I was in the middle of these two guys!’”
Ilott will next be behind the wheel of an F1 car at Paul Ricard in a few weeks time.
