Kyle Larson has won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, making it the 269th victory for Hendrick Motorsports, the most for a Cup Series team. The driver reflected on his performance so far, saying he ‘didn’t expect to be this good’.

“I did not expect to be this good,” he said when talking about his expectations coming into this season. “I knew I would be good. Chase Elliott won the championship last year, and Jimmy had one of the fastest cars ever raced, they just had some issues and didn’t get the finishes they quite deserved, so I had that in the back of my mind.

“I thought ‘well, if Jimmy had the fastest car, maybe we would still continue to have one of the fastest cars this year’ and Cliff and everybody at Hendrick motorsports probably got their stuff even better than at the end of the year, and it’s been awesome to see we’ve had 4 cars in the top 5. It’s been really cool.”

Larson has not been a member of Hendrick Motorsports for long, but says the team is ‘an amazing place’ to be part of, as everyone loves to work in what they do.

“It’s an amazing place, everything about the compound there at Hendrick Motorsports is perfect, everything down to the way they mowed the lawn, it looks amazing. I think they put a level of effort and pride in everything, so I don’t think it’s a surprise to anybody that our cars are this good.

“He’s built just an amazing empire and everybody loves to work there too. They all respect him so much and love to work for him, and want to do a good job for him, so results follow. It’s probably hard for Mr. H to have a few thousand employees and I’m sure they all love to work for him. I don’t think there’s another race team out there that everybody that works there loves their boss. But I think that at Hendrick Motorsports it is that way, and I think because of that, the results follow, because everybody puts a 100% of their effort in.”

When asked if battling his own teammates was a problem, Kyle replied: “It’s a great problem to have when we’re all battling each other for the win. We’ve done a great job of racing each other hard, but not putting each other in a bad spot either. We all want to see each other succeed for Rick, and we all work great together during the week, and even on the weekends when we’re racing.

“I thought we were going to have another 1-2-3-4 finish tonight, but Kyle had other plans and messed that up. But no, it’s been a great night and really a great week for this team.”
