Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo takes a brilliant pole with the lap record, as teammate Maverick Vinales fails to get to Q2.

It was time for MotoGP to qualify. The slowest 12 in combined practice went through Q1, with the fastest two joining 10 others in Q2 to decide pole position.

Maverick Vinales, Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi are the big names in Q1, and a line of riders formed behind Vinales as the session went green. The early running was Takaaki Nakagami from Enea Bastianini in the top two, with Aleix Espargaro third.

The second runs would be interesting, with only four minutes left. Vinales was the biggest name outside the top two, as he was a title contender. Marquez was playing mammoth mind games, making Vinales livid. It was red sectors aplenty. Bastianini, Nakagami, Vinales and both Marquez’s on good laps.

Marquez went top from Vinales. Bastianini was out, but there were still red sectors. Espargaro went second, pushing Vinales out, but he got over the line with one second remaining, and he was on red sectors. Then he ran wide, he will start the Italian Grand Prix 13th.

Marc Marquez and Aleix Espargaro would get through to Q2, joining the likes of Bagnaia, Quartararo, Miller and Binder.

Incredibly, there was a risk of rain in Q2, with threatening clouds looming as the session went green. The early running saw none other than Espargaro on top after getting through Q1, but he was quickly pipped by Quartararo, with Jack Miller in third.

With four minutes to go, the riders went out for their final runs, but it was in vain. Quartararo pounded a massive time around to take pole comfortably, with a lap record to go with. Second place went to Bagnaia, with Johann Zarco third. Fourth went to Espargaro with Jack Miller fifth.
