After a disappointing performance for Lewis Hamilton qualifying P7 for the Monaco Grand Prix, Toto Wolff admitted being ready to set up a risky strategy for the Briton although they will ask him to not take too many risks.

Hamilton was simply lacking pace during qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix and did not manage to achieve a competitive lap. The seven-time world champion mainly complained about the difficulty to bring the W10 in the right tire temperature window.

As Hamilton is currently in a fierce championship battle against Max Verstappen, Wolff pointed out that his driver cannot afford a DNF, which would allow Verstappen to catch up in the rankings, filling his 14 points deficit if he finished P3 or higher.

Therefore, asked about how many risks the German team was ready to take with Hamilton during the race, Mercedes’ team principal already had a clear opinion on the situation.

“Driving-wise, no [risks], because P7 still scores six points,” Wolff stated.

“But six points, you’d rather have six points than none. If Max wins the race or finishes second, that’s still a large enough gap,” he added, pointing out that a P7 finish would allow Hamilton to stay in front or at least close to his Red Bull rival.

Even though Mercedes is not ready to push its limits on the track, they are already planning to take all the risks strategy-wise, as they showed in Spain with an ambitious strategy that paid off.

“Monaco obviously isn’t the place where you have lots of overtaking opportunities.

“So driving-wise no, but I think in terms of strategy, we can take risks. They are obviously limited, due to the reasons stated before, with traffic behind. But I think we have a car that is quicker than P7.”

If Hamilton wants to ensure the championship lead at the end of this weekend, he will have to finish P4 or higher, therefore covering the maximum amount of points that Verstappen could claim if he wins the race with the fastest lap to his account.
