After a fortunate and well-managed Monaco Grand Prix, Lando Norris claimed a podium finish and is now standing in the third position in the championship. Here are the first words of the Briton after an unexpected third career podium.
Lando Norris started the Monaco Grand Prix in the fifth position and a podium finish looked almost unreachable for the McLaren driver considering the recent pace of the four frontrunners and the overtaking difficulty in the principality.
Nonetheless, the misfortune of some makes the happiness of others and the two consecutive retirements of Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc offered an amazing opportunity to the 21-year-old.
Late in the race, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez became a threat and was standing less than one second behind Norris, as the Briton warned his team about tire degradation and felt uncomfortable on his hard compounds.
However, after an amazingly managed race, Norris seized the third podium of his career and asserted his position of current best midfield driver. The 21-year-old has had such an amazing season beginning that he is now standing in the third place in the Drivers’ Championship, in front of Bottas, Perez, and Leclerc.
After the race, Norris was almost left speechless and could not hide his extreme happiness after an unexpected performance.
“I don’t know what to say, I didn’t think I’ll be here today,” Norris said.
“It’s down to these guys, you know. It’s always a dream to be on the podium here. It’s special, I didn’t think it would happen, had a bit of luck, I wanna say some good driving and a good car all weekend.”
“It’s special here, I’ll cherish it.”
“Thanks to the boys and girls, this one’s for them.”
