Red Bull Racing’s team principal Christian Horner admits that the team needs to put extra pressure on their title rivals Mercedes by the means of Sergio Perez.
After 4 races of the 2021 Formula 1 season, Red Bull has scored 112 points, 29 points shy of the Constructors’ Championship leader Mercedes. At the same time, Max Verstappen has scored 80 out of these 112 points, while Sergio Perez has only added 32 points to the tally. More than that, the Mexican does not get to battle with both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas frequently, leaving Max Verstappen alone and not giving Red Bull strategy freedom. Christian Horner believes that the team needs Perez to join in the battle.
“Of course we desperately need him [Perez] to be in that gap so that Mercedes don’t have the strategic options that they had today. But I’m convinced that will come for Checo as he finds more confidence and time in the car,” Horner said.
The team boss also confirmed that he did not want to critisize and put pressure on his driver.
“The facts are that obviously Checo had been held up [in the battle with Daniel Ricciardo]. So the facts are very clear that obviously the two lead guys were so far ahead of the rest of the pack, as it were, and gave Lewis a free stop as he had in Hungary, he’s only got to get it past his teammate that was never going to be an issue,” he commented.
“So that’s why we need both cars up there strategically so that option isn’t available to Mercedes,” he added.
