Alonso is satisfied with the great progress Alpine made in the last two races in terms of pace, and he also said that it seems “too good to be true”.

It was not an easy start to the season for Alpine, which looked good in the pre-season testing but lacked a bit of pace during the first and second races of the 2021 season.

However, in Portimao, the French team brought new upgrades, which seemed to work. Those new developments worked as well in Barcelona, a track that is extremely important to understand the real pace of the car. Both Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon qualified for the Q3, scoring a P10 and P5 respectively.

Alonso knows that the battle in the midfield will not be easy, but he praised the team for the work made in the last few weeks.

“I probably tend to believe that the McLaren and Ferrari, they are a little bit quicker,” he said. “At least in four races, they’ve been able to be more consistent in the pace.

“But it is true that we made a very big step in Portugal. We didn’t know if it was track-specific or if it was real. So it was very nice to confirm here in Barcelona that it was real and it was not only Portimao.

“I think the Alpine now is in the mix, with Ferrari and McLaren. So that’s a very positive trend with what we see now in the team, and we are very, very excited for the next couple of races.

“But we need to remain cautious and confirm it. Because, as I said, Bahrain and Imola compared to Portugal and Barcelona, it seems maybe too good to be true.

“But it is true because both cars were in Q3 and Esteban was sixth in Portugal and fifth here, so this is good news.”

I am an Italian guy. I love Motorsport because of the emotions that it gives me and I grew up watching races. That's what I love!
