Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz has admitted the team are still worried about tire degradation despite the race seeming to be a sure-fire one stop.
In Portimao, Ferrari was struck by problems with tire management, dropping Sainz out of the points. He’s qualified sixth for today’s Spanish Grand Prix but believes those issues will plague him again.
“We are carrying a bit of a deficit into the race,” he said.
“We know in tire management we are not where we want to be still. In Portimao, we struggled a lot, and we saw on Friday again that we don’t have the best race pace and tire deg. But at the same time if we get a good start, and we execute the strategy well, I still think we can finish in front of the rest.”
“In qualifying, quite a few things worked for me that worked for me in Portimao and now I’m trying to see what we can do tomorrow because tomorrow is our most complicated day, where we normally go a little bit backward.”
Charles Leclerc starts one place ahead of Sainz.
