After yet another thrilling Formula 3 race, Olli Caldwell seized the win, over Victor Martins, taking the championship win after two late dramas between the race leaders.
For the second race of the 2021 F3 season, the starting grid was defined by the inversed order of the first 12 finishers of this morning’s session. Enzo Fittipaldi, therefore, started the race on pole position, accompanied by David Schumacher to fulfill the first row.
Charles Leclerc, who just qualified in P4 for tomorrow’s F1 race was probably keeping a watchful eye on his younger brother Arthur Leclerc starting in P28 after he suffered a puncture in race 1.
This morning’s race winner, Alexander Smolyar saw himself stuck in the gravel pit after a puncture due to a little touch with Clement Novalak, causing him to lose control and bring Logan Sargeant out with him. The safety car was deployed to evacuate the two single-seaters safely.
Prema drivers Hauger and Caldwell seemed to find a good pace in the early stages of the race and both put big pressure on MP’s driver Victor Martins. After 9 laps of racing, the Norwegian took over Martins after the French made a little driving mistake.
The front pack of the race was very tight as the top 5 was held between 3 seconds at the mid-race. Hauger pursued his ascent in the leaderboard, seizing the fastest lap of the race after 12 laps of racing, while Schumacher took over Fittipaldi for the first position. However, the gaps were still extremely tight between the frontrunners and nothing seemed to be done.
Further in the leaderboard, Leclerc was making his way up the field, standing in P20 after just 14 laps of racing.
On lap 15, the battle for the lead was roaring between Schumacher and Fittipaldi, at the approach of turn 1. Fittipaldi ran wide at turn 1 and rolled on a sausage curb to come back on track. His single-seater was, therefore, slightly unbalanced and the Brazilian inevitably collided with Schumacher.
The German finished his course in the wall and the second safety car of the session was deployed. During the procedure, Fittipaldi encountered a problem and also had to retire.
Matteo Nannini took advantage of the situation and saw himself stand in P1 at the end of the safety car, closely followed by Hauger, Caldwell, and Martins. There were just 5 laps of a promising battle left when the safety car re-entered the pits.
At the beginning of the 21st lap, Hauger and Nannini came together at turn 1. The HWA driver spun when the Prema driver suffered from damages on his single-seater. The race lead was once more shuffled and this time, Caldwell and Martins were sitting in the first positions of the race.
Caldwell finally seized the win over the French driver after a superb race, as Frederik Vesti filled the podium. We could also point out Juan Manuel Correa’s exceptional comeback, as the American finished in the top 10, almost two years after his horrific accident at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix.
