Alpine driver Esteban Ocon says the French squad is now able to fight with cars that were faster than them on the opening two rounds of the season.

Both Alpine drivers managed to score points at the Portuguese Grand Prix, finishing 7th and 8th respectively.

“It was a really fun race,” Ocon said. “Definitely good to have some battles with cars that were quicker than us in the first two races. It definitely feels good to have done such a step in terms of performance.”

The improvements from Alpine came as a disappointment for Alfa Romeo. Antonio Giovinazzi was hoping to have a points-scoring weekend with his squad but admitted the French team was too fast for them to catch up. However, the Italian highlighted their performance was better than Aston Martin’s.

“It was just a clear race from my said,” Giovinazzi said after the race. “I had some fun with Fernando in the beginning and some fun with Sebastian in the end. We started P12, today we were faster than Aston Martin, slower than Alpine. So it was not enough to be in the top 10.”
