After the race, Nikita Mazepin apologized to Sergio Perez after blocking him during the Grand Prix, almost creating a collision with the Mexican driver.
Blue flags were shown to Mazepin as soon as he exited the pits. However, he did not respect them, blocking Perez in Turn 3. Therefore, Sergio had to slow down in order not to hit him and lost time over Lewis Hamilton.
Due to that, the Russian driver received a five-second time penalty and one penalty point for his Super Licence.
“It was very close, I thought that he saw me,” said Perez. “He apologized after the race. He didn’t see me. I thought he did. I thought that I damaged my front wing.”
Mazepin took all the blame for what happened, even though the team did not warn him in time.
“It’s pretty simple, totally my mistake on that,” he said. “I was converted to a Plan C in the middle of the race – I was the only one to do a two-stop – and to be honest I expected to go out on my own.
“I didn’t get a warning from the team, but no excuses on this. It is just my fault. I apologized to Checo already.”
