Lewis Hamilton proves Mercedes’ strong form in Portugal with the quickest lap time of the second free practice on Friday.
After an afternoon break, the racing action resumed at Portimao during the F1 Portuguese GP. The start of the session had to be delayed by 10 minutes due to some extra work required on the race track. After the everything was ready, the session got underway.
Max Verstappen wasted no time and went to the top of the standings, though both Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas went even quicker. In fact, the Dutchman had a big issue less than 10 minutes into the session regarding the brake-by-wire system. Apparently, it was a software issue.
The issue was really dealt with as Verstappen came back on top in the session – 1:20.322. It was not for long though as Bottas had a quicker lap time on his Soft tire compound. Several minutes later, his teammate Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to beat the 1:20 barrier in the session.
The drivers kept setting lap times and getting more acquainted with the race track. Closer to the end of the session, we got to see drivers making race pace simulations.
All in all, it was Lewis Hamilton, who had made the recovery from the challenging FP1 to set the pace in FP2. He was followed by his biggest opponent so far in the season Max Verstappen. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas completed the top 3 of the practice.
