It was recently officialized: Jan and Kevin Magnussen will pair up at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, behind the wheel of a High Class Racing LMP2 car. Jan Magnussen could not hide his excitement, admitting it was his last chance to pair up with his son.

This year, Haas decided to replace both their F1 drivers in favor of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. Romain Grosjean decided to take a chance in Indy Car, while Kevin Magnussen opted for endurance racing.

As of 2022, with Peugeot entering WEC, Magnussen was signed to drive one of the two Hypercars of the French manufacturer. For now, he is driving with Chip Ganassi Racing in IMSA.

His father, Jan Magnussen, admitted it has always been a goal for him to drive alongside his son, especially at one of the most legendary races in the world: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but this dream never really came close to reality as they were never able to conclude a deal with a team.

“It feels like it is something that we have been talking about forever,” Jan Magnussen said to Motorsport.com.

“It’s been on the agenda since Kevin started coming with me to Le Mans when he was karting. (…) He always said he wanted to do the race and reckoned it would be cool if we could do it together one day.”

“There was talk about it, but it never really came close.”

Moreover, with his son already having career plans for 2022, the 47-year-old admitted it was probably his last chance to ever be able to pair up with his son, before having to retire from motor racing.

“I’m so happy that it is finally happening because this was the last chance. (…) He’s off to Peugeot and when he’s done, I’m going to be far too old: this was absolutely the last shot.”

Magnussen-junior is starting to gather a lot of experience in endurance racing, as he already participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona, earlier this year, in DPi. Nevertheless, he will have to adapt very quickly to his LMP2 Oreca, as he will only be able to test his car for a few days, at the beginning of this Summer, before aligning himself at the start of the world’s most famous endurance race.
