Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso believes that his current home at Alpine could be world champion material someday.

At the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Alonso enjoyed the first point of his Formula 1 return, taking tenth place behind teammate Esteban Ocon to give Alpine their first points of the year.

After the race, Alonso said the team could be even more, possibly even title winning, in the future.

“I enjoy it. I think the team is renewed, motivated, and has the potential to be a champion team in the future. I’m sure of that. I don’t know if it will take two, five or seven years, but we are in a good project and I am enjoying it.”

On another issue, Alonso was asked about his feelings regarding the “godfather” nickname he has been given by Luca de Meo.

“I think he meant that of everyone in the team, one of the most expert is the driver, which is rare. Normally you come to Formula 1 and we have a lot of highly experienced members of the team who tell you about old races and the anecdotes and curiosities of Imola, the curiosities of other circuits and I am probably the guy who is telling all those things, it is the pilot who is counting these things now and that is something strange at the moment.”

Formula 1 returns on May 2 for the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao.
