Esteban Ocon said that working with the two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, helps him grow as a driver. Plus, the kindness, experience, and sincerity of the Spaniard help the team as well.
In Saturday’s qualifying, the French driver managed to get into Q3, and he put his Alpine in P9. On the other hand, Alonso was knocked out in Q2. Ocon also said that “the ninth position was the maximum we could get. The others were out of our reach.”
Both Alpine and the drivers still need to fully understand the car to get the most out of it. Anyway, Ocono believes that a key point for the team is having Alonso, who can help with his experience. That is also why the French driver said that he enjoys working with him.
“I am very happy to have a teammate like Fernando, it is great to have a champion by my side, he is one of the best drivers. Many people tell me things about him, also what I see, I enjoy working with him. Fernando, he is very sincere when I say something to him,” he said.
Ocon also admitted that Alonso was one of the first drivers he admired when he started racing, and that makes their relationship even better.
“We have very similar opinions about the car, and we work very well, he is very kind to me. He is one of the great drivers that I noticed when I was young, so it is very special for me to work with Fernando.”
Finally, Ocon recognized that Fernando was very fast in Bahrain, but he did not understand the lack of pace he had during the qualifying session in Imola. However, the French driver is convinced that Alonso will be fast on Sunday.
“He has a lot of pace, he was very strong in Bahrain. I don’t know exactly what happened today, but he showed a good pace throughout the weekend, so I’m sure he will fight during the race.”
