Maverick Vinales says it is “impossible to understand” why some of his laps were deleted at the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix qualifying.
Vinales had two laps canceled during Q2 in Portugal because they were deemed to be off the track limits, although video evidence shows the limits to be minimums.
Vinales qualified 12th for Sunday’s Grand Prix, as both of his most competitive laps were deleted.
“Honestly, I thought it was yellow flag and when I go into the box they tell me it’s because I touched the green,” Vinales told Motorsport.com. “And I say ‘it’s impossible I touched the green because I didn’t touch [it]’.
“I know when I touch the green and I didn’t touch the green.
“Anyway, at the end this is the rule, it’s one opinion, you cannot say nothing, you cannot appeal.
“I went to check [and] I cannot understand because most of the tire was inside and you cannot understand if the tire is touching the green. It’s impossible to understand, but this is the rules, we cannot do nothing.
“I was first, and in this way, I need to be P12, so it’s the judgment of one person and it is what it is. We know the stewards already from many years ago and it’s like this.
“We need to concentrate on tomorrow, Yamaha was pushing very hard because they have the same opinion as me and it’s not clear that I touched the green.
“If it’s clear, it is how it is and that’s it. But it’s not clear. Maybe they can give me five positions more than just canceling the lap.
“But it is like this, you cannot do nothing.”
