Helmut Marko said a “couple of mistakes” caused Max Verstappen to miss out on Pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton was able to beat both Red Bull cars to take the first spot for the race at Imola tomorrow. Sergio Pérez completed the front row and Max Verstappen will start third.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has said Verstappen missed out on the top spot due to a “couple of mistakes,” but still praised the “very strong performance” from his other driver, Sergio Pérez.

“In his first run Max ran into Stroll in the first sector,” Marko told Sky Germany. “In his second run, he made a couple of mistakes that caused him to lose about two tenths.

“Nevertheless, a very strong performance from Perez. It’s impressive to see, especially as it’s only his second race for us,” he concluded.

The Mexican had told the media before the start of the weekend that he expects to fight for a podium and even for the victory of the Grand Prix, and so far his performance promises a good race for tomorrow.
