Bahrain GP loss ‘not going to matter’ if Red Bull has quickest car, says Verstappen

Max Verstappen thinks that his unfortunate runner-up finish in Bahrain will not hurt if Red Bull has the best car on the grid.

Red Bull Racing seems to be stronger than ever at the start of the 2021 Formula 1 season. The RB16B car’s high-rake concept seems to be effective, which is a huge advantage in the title fight with Mercedes. However, Max Verstappen did not get to convert his Bahrain GP pole position into race victory thanks to Mercedes’ wise strategy and track limit controversy.

Ahead of the Imola GP, the Dutchman stated that the unfortunate outcome of that race would not mean anything in case Red Bull Racing proved to be the best car on the grid.

“Definitely an opportunity missed [in Bahrain] but if we have the fastest car, then it’s not going to matter because then we have 22 races to finish in front of them,” Verstappen said.

“But we’ll see about that. Like I said, this is not Bahrain. Maybe there was a one-off, but I hope of course not. I have a good feeling that it will not be,” he added.

The Red Bull Racing driver also emphasized that both his team and Mercedes might improve at Imola, which would only spice the things up.

“So we definitely can do better than what we showed there [in Bahrain]. But on the other hand, for sure, they [Mercedes] can also do better.”
