Chase Elliott believes that the latest Cup Series race at Martinsville was a good performance and looks forward to racing at Richmond.

The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott has been close to winning the race on several occasions in the 2021 season. The no.9 Hendrick Motorsports driver spoke about his desire to make it all come together to return to the victory lane.

“Yeah, I hope so [to win],” Elliott told ASN Motorsports. “We’re trying hard, we’re always trying hard whether we win or finish last, we’re trying hard. So it’s always a fight.”

The latest race where Chase Elliott was close to winning was on Sunday at Martinsville. The Dawsonville native reflected on the race, stating it had been a good opportunity to prepare for the Playoffs race there later in the year.

“I felt like Martinsville was a really strong fight for our team, honestly. I felt like we had a long day just in kind of having the strategy worked out and I felt like we passed a lot of cars, which was good,” Elliott said.

“And I felt like we got up there, towards the front, there at the end, we definitely weren’t as good as Martin [Truex Jr.] and Ryan [Blaney], but I thought we were probably mixed in with that group behind them, which is not what you’re looking for, but it’s certainly solid and something you can build off and that’s an important race for the fall. I hope we can go back and build on that after that race, but certainly, looking to Richmond,” he added.

Richmond has been the track where Chase Elliott had problems in the Cup Series – 3 top 5s and 4 top 10s in 10 starts there with the best result of 2nd in 2019. Despite all the difficulties, Elliott supposed that winning there would a crucial moment.

“It’s been a struggle track for me. I would love to go there and try to get the win, that would be a big one if we can go and do that, just knowing how bad we’ve struggled there in the past. It reminds me much of Martinsville in our struggles there and kind of progressing and trying to get better,” Elliott commented.

“So hopefully Richmond is another step in right direction and we could contend up there,” he said in the conclusion.

Chase Elliott will start 3rd at Richmond this Sunday.
