Renault’s CEO Luca de Meo wants Fernando Alonso to be the factor, which will make the team reach a new level.
Fernando Alonso has made his Formula 1 comeback this year with Alpine. Quite naturally, Fernando Alonso has returned to the Enstone-located team with one goal – to win. Luca de Meo has high hopes on the two-time F1 world champion as Renault’s CEO believes that the Spaniard’s experience, mentality, and motivation should help Alpine become a top-tier team in the foreseeable future.
“Renault is Fernando’s home, but I want him to use his experience to help us all grow. He has a different role to the one from 15 years ago. He’s the Godfather of everybody. The only thing I’m asking him is to help us become a top team because it’s about attitude and mindset. And he has it,” de Meo told Top Gear.
“Our focus is to actually give him a car where he can have fun. And then you never know what happens in a Grand Prix, right? Maybe we need to be a little bit lucky, but we’ll be doing everything we can for him and for Esteban,” he added.
Fernando Alonso showed his leadership skills instantly as he was the only Alpine driver to be in the Bahrain GP Q3, where he was 9th. Despite retiring from the race itself the following day, he showed good pace and would have scored in the points top 10 eventually.
