Ever since he left Formula 1 in 2019, Nico Hulkenberg has been working behind the scenes in an attempt to get back on the grid on any opportunity that rises.
After being announced as reserve driver for Mercedes and Aston Martin, the German driver recently came out stating that he had already been putting work in the simulator, in case he is needed in an F1 car this season.
“I have an idea of how to drive a car of this type. It’s a first impression, which is also important. The Aston Martin is different from last year. It’s always a different feeling on the track and another learning process, which you have to go through quickly,” he told Servus TV.
“When I present myself somewhere for a position, I come with the best documents,” said the German, when joking about the time he presented himself to Red Bull’s Helmut Marko without a resume, during an attempt to enter the Red Bull young driver program.
Despite losing his seat in 2019, Hulkenberg did three races for Racing Point last year and with the possibility of driving a Mercedes this year, it could be an interesting 2021 for the driver, and staying prepared for a possible last-minute call is of great importance in order to maximize every opportunity he might get to drive an F1 car this season.
