ART Grand Prix’s driver Alexander Smolyar has set the fastest lap time of the opening day of the Formula 3 pre-season testing.
As the 2021 Formula 3 season is getting closer and closer, the teams and the drivers have got the opportunity to get adapted to the machinery. The first pre-season testing session started on Saturday at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
The testing day was split into two sessions. It all started with the morning session. Clement Novalak set the quickest lap time of that session in his Trident car – 1:19.162. He was followed by the birthday man Caio Collet and Victor Martins, who drive for MP Motorsport.
One of the biggest storylines of the day was the miraculous comeback of Juan Manuel Correa. Today was his first outing in a single-seater car since the tragic accident in the F2 Feature Race in Belgium in 2019, which took Anthoine Hubert’s life. Saturday was a solid day for Correa as he finished 14th overall after both sessions – his lap time was 1:19.456.
The day did not go well for Oliver Rasmussen as he had crashed his HWA car, which impacted his day. He still had the 12th fastest time of the day.
As we got closer to the chequered flag, the lap times were improving and we got to see numerous drivers at the top of the standings. All in all, it was ART GP’s Alexander Smolyar, who was the quickest driver of the day. Jonny Edgar in Carlin was second, while Smolyar’s teammate Frederik Vesti completed the top 3 of the testing day 1. The pack is quite close as less than 0.4s separate the top 10.
