Sergio Perez made his debut with Red Bull at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Mexican finished the race in P5 after starting from the pit lane, and Helmut Marko praised him, saying he is “on the same level as Verstappen in the race.”
Marko was extremely pleased with the performance of both drivers during the race, and he said that their pace was quite similar. However, he also reckons that the situation on Saturday is pretty different.
“The speed in the race is at the same level as Verstappen. When he was in clean air, he set the same times. So far, so good. Unfortunately, it was not like that in qualifying,” he said.
Perez only finished 13th in qualifying, and he struggled a lot against Max Verstappen. Helmut explained where the Mexican could improve, but he believes it will be difficult for him to get close to Max in qualifying.
“The positive thing was that he lost most of the time in the first corner. Already during the preseason tests, it was like that. In sector 3, he was faster than Max on average. The only problem is that you have to get the whole lap. We are convinced that he will be very close to Max also in qualifying.”
