After a promising start to the F1 2021 campaign, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz believes the team could be on course to rival McLaren.
In 2020, Ferrari endured its worst season in almost half a century, dropping down to sixth in the standings. A restructure over the off-season threw Sebastian Vettel out, to be replaced by Carlos Sainz. So far in 2021, the signs look good for Ferrari to finish in the top 5 in the title. Alpine and Aston Martin have been hurt in the off-season, and the Prancing Horses seem to have found the power they lost last year.
Sainz seems especially confident. In an interview with formula 1, he stated he expected Ferrari to compete with McLaren this season for third in the title.
“It is encouraging because last year I remember that with McLaren I passed Charles [Leclerc] fairly easy, so I remember how big the difference between the McLaren and Ferrari was and how close I was to overtaking Ricciardo at the end. I think I had much better pace than Daniel there towards the end of the race; we were catching at more than half a second per lap, and there are positive signs.”
Sainz finished eighth, less than a tenth of a second behind Daniel Ricciardo at the flag. Charles Leclerc finished sixth, meaning Ferrari earned 12 points – something they hope they can add to come Imola in two and a half weeks time.
