Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff did not expect that Mercedes will manage to win Bahrain GP after challenging testing and rae weekend.

Mercedes has not entered a new Formula 1 season as a clear title favorite for the first time in a long time. Despite not the strongest form from the Silver Arrows, Lewis Hamilton won the opening race in Bahrain last Sunday ahead of Max Verstappen. Team boss Toto Wolff commented on the performance of the team.

“If somebody would have told me that this is going to be the result on Sunday, I would have probably not believed it,” Wolff said after the race.

“But we recovered well from the test today [on Sunday], I think we were competitive. We were definitely competitive. The strategy made all the difference. We took a bold move at the beginning, gained track position, and then at the end the racing god was on our side,” he added.

Both Mercedes cars finished on the podium in Bahrain – Lewis Hamilton won the race, while Valtteri Bottas finished the race third.
