Valtteri Bottas said he disagreed with parts of his qualifying strategy, saying the team “wasted a tire set” after a first bad run in Q1.

“The practice this afternoon [Saturday] was quite tricky,” said Bottas. “I didn’t really find a good balance with the car, so it made more chances for the qualifying.

“The first run of qualifying, actually felt OK. But the lap time wasn’t quite there, so we went again with the new tires in Q1, which I kind of disagreed, we basically wasted a tire set.

“So in Q3, I only had one run with the new tires. It was not really an optimal qualifying for me.”

Bottas said that his pace and confidence with the car in the windy Bahrain conditions improved throughout the qualifying session, saying it was getting “better and better.”

“But throughout the qualifying, the pace really, my confidence within the car and the feeling with the car and understanding of the wind was improving. So it was getting better and better.”

The Finn also said his rival, Max Verstappen, was “out of reach,” but said his qualifying position is not bad, and that he’s sure he “can do something good with that.”

“But throughout the qualifying, the pace really, my confidence within the car and the feeling with the car and understanding of the wind was improving. So it was getting better and better,” Bottas concluded.
