During qualifying in Bahrain, AlphaTauri surprised everyone with a shocking performance by their French driver, Pierre Gasly, who put his car in P5 for tomorrow’s race.

Already during testing, it seemed that AlphaTauri worked well during the winter and improved the car a lot. Both race-pace and qualifying simulations were incredibly promising. However, since it was only testing, no one knew their real pace.

Then, when the first free practice session came, both Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda showed that the car has great potential, and they might be able to fight for the third position in the constructor championship.

In qualifying, Gasly set the fifth-fastest time overall, while Tsunoda is only 13th because he wanted to qualify with medium tires. However, both drivers can score a good amount of points on Sunday, considering Friday race-pace simulations.

After today’s qualifying, Gasly admitted that he did not expect such a strong performance by the team. “Honestly, really happy with this first qualifying of the year. It’s always good to have a good baseline and start the season in the best way possible. We didn’t expect it honestly. We knew that we had a strong package but to qualify in the fifth position and especially go through on the medium in Q2. Hopefully a good advantage for tomorrow,” Gasly told Sky Sports after the session.

The French driver also spent some words on his new teammate: “He is doing a good job. It’s his first race in F1. He has done a few mistakes here and there but when he manages to put it together, he is really fast.”
