Nico Hulkenberg will still be in the Formula 1 paddock this season, despite not having a full-time seat.
Nico Hulkenberg’s ties with Formula 1 are still not diminished. The German has announced earlier on Friday during the ServusTV broadcast that he will be in the position of a reserve driver for both Mercedes and Aston Martin at several F1 races in 2021.
The statement was relatively short, but it was very clear: “I will work as a reserve driver for Aston Martin and also for Mercedes in selected races.”
Nico Hulkenberg’s last full-time Formula 1 season was back in 2019 with Renault. He took a sabbatical in 2020, but still took part in three races last season at Racing Point, replacing either Sergio Perez or Lance Stroll, who had had COVID-19. With the lack of practice time and a new vehicle, Hulkenberg had incredible performances, which raised the question about his return to Formula 1.
Unfortunately, the German still did not get a seat for the 2021 season, but his presence in the paddock throughout the year will bring attention and we could see his comeback in 2022.
