Fernando Alonso says he does not regret leaving Scuderia Ferrari in 2014, saying “it’s 2021 and they’re still not winning”
Alonso, who makes a return to F1 with Alpine this season, after leaving the sport for two years to focus on other motorsport activities. He says he does not regret any of his past decisions, including leaving Ferrari.
“We are in 2021 and Ferrari is still not winning yet. I never regret any of my decisions. With a crystal ball, you can make a different decision at some point, but at each moment I felt that I was doing the right thing.”
He also shot down the alleged bad reputation he had had with teams such as McLaren and Ferrari.
“It is the third time that I drive for Renault and I was twice at McLaren. I have been in different teams and I have repeated, so they should be happy with me. If not, I don’t know why they called me. The bad reputation? I laugh.”
Finally, he talked about his hopes for 2021. Nobody quite knows who will place where this season, as there were so many driver changes. Alonso said he hoped for 2021 to be a continuation of 2020, in which he could get multiple podiums.
“The excitement of the people is normal and I am happy to see it. From the moment we announced that I would be racing this year with Alpine I have felt a huge and warm welcome from everyone, by the team of course, but also by part of my colleagues in the paddock, the drivers, the fans, the media, the F1 leaders… I have felt love and welcome. It is something very nice to feel. I hope we can fight for several podiums, but to achieve more than that will be a surprise.”
