Competitiveness of Alfa Romeo “won’t decide my F1 future”, says Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen is the epitome of Formula 1. The Finn is about to enter his 19th season in the premier class of motorsports, but he’s not thinking about quitting just yet.

He claims that the performance of the new Alfa Romeo C41 has no influence on his decision to retire from the sport.

“I doubt it’s going to make any difference on what happens next year. But obviously the better we can do, the more fun it is not just for us as drivers but for the team and everybody is happier the better you do. So, I think… years when you’re not exactly where you want to be, it’s always long years, it’s not as much fun and you can see it on everybody’s faces.”

Now 41-years-old, Kimi has put in a strong performance in pre-season testing, completing 422 laps with Alfa Romeo as a team. Raikkonen set the fourth fastest lap on the final day. The signs are for a better season than the last one, but with only 8 points from last year, the chances of a good midfield finish are relatively slim.

A big part of the speed this year will be the new power unit from Ferrari that Alfa Romeo is getting. When this has improved, a better result can be expected. That’s also what the Finn says.

“For sure, we got a bit more horsepower. Definitely it is a step forward but in many ways you’d expect the other manufacturers are doing the same thing, so how much… did they improve? But for sure it is a step in the right direction. It’s the same with the car: you always want more, but it’s going in the right way.”
