Fernando Alonso will make his return to Formula 1 this year after two years of racing in other series, trying to get his hands on the Triple Crown. However, he remains very confident in his driving abilities.
Asked if he was at the level of Hamilton, Verstappen, or Sebastian Vettel, the Spaniard driver answered very simply and full of confidence: “No. I’m better.”
Nonetheless, the two-time world champion should have a challenging return year in Formula 1 as the grid is looking more challenging than ever. With up to five teams that are looking like they could be able to clinch the third position in the team standings, Alpine will have a lot on its plate if they want to improve last year’s fifth position. Fernando Alonso remains however realistic on what Alpine could achieve in 2021.
“I’m back in Formula 1 with the aim of doing well obviously, and the aim of having the chance to win races, hoping to fight for championships, […] We understand that this year it’s not going to be possible because the regulations are a little bit different but basically the same as previous years, so I don’t see any miracles happening there”, the former Renault and current Alpine driver says.
“But in 2022 there’s a chance with the new regulations mixing a little bit the order of the grid and we want to be one of those teams that surprises everybody and to do that we need to work hard this year,” he adds.
It is also worth considering that the Spaniard will have to deal with an experienced driver in terms of racing in the most recent Formula One cars in the person of Esteban Ocon. Indeed, the Frenchman looked sharper than ever before at the end of the 2020 season, managing to finish the Sakhir Grand Prix in the second position. If the french driver can manage to keep up a good rhythm behind the wheel of the A521, he could be able to give Fernando Alonso a hard time beating him.
