Charles Leclerc says that Ferrari threw off the “strange” atmosphere inside the team after the struggles faced during the 2020 season.
Ferrari is ready to approach the 2021 season with one specific goal: recover from the most disastrous season in the last 40 years. In fact, in 2020, the Red team was just sixth in the constructor championship, and they only managed to score three podiums.
Ferrari had many problems with the SF1000. The car they built was not the one they expected, it did not have enough power, and it was way too draggy.
Moreover, the Maranello-based team arrived at the first race after having already announced that Sebastian Vettel would leave the team at the end of the season. To fill the empty seat, Carlos Sainz was the chosen one.
It was clear that the atmosphere was not ideal inside Ferrari, and that is why Leclerc described it as “strange”.
“At first there was a strange atmosphere at first in 2020 where we realized the reality of things, that it was quite a lot worse than what we expected,” Leclerc told Motorsport.com. “There was a time where it was not great. But very quickly the mentality changed and there was a huge motivation to try and come back to where we want to be.
“I think this didn’t change for this year. With Carlos, he is bringing experience from other teams too, that he’s very interesting and that he’s also giving us new worlds to explore. So this is very interesting, but I guess the mentality of the team itself is still as motivated as last year and is willing to push to have better things and better days coming soon”, he added.
