Kimi Raikkonen reports from the Formula 1 pre-season testing that the new Alfa Romeo C41 is feeling quicker than last year’s machine.
Alfa Romeo Racing’s 2020 challenger, the C39, served the team an eighth-placed finish to a shortened season. The C39 was one of the slowest cars on the grid in 2020, the squad’s drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi gathering just eight points across the season. However, following a three-month transition to 2021, the crew’s hard work may be paying dividends as an improvement since last year seems to be showing.
Across the pre-season testing weekend in Bahrain, Alfa Romeo duo Raikkonen and Giovinazzi posted 420 laps in the new C41, the team’s best finishing position being fourth quickest on Sunday. While lap times in testing may not predict the team’s performance for the season ahead, Raikkonen reports that the car is quicker than last year’s C39. Thus, Alfa Romeo has some hope to cling to as the beginning of the season looms ahead.
“It was a positive day,” Raikkonen stated after looping the Bahrain International Circuit 166 times on Sunday. “We got all we came here for and now we just have to see where we are when we’re back here racing in two weeks.”
“Times in testing don’t mean anything and, right now, we don’t know how all the other teams are performing. But we know how our car does, and feeling-wise, it is better than last year”.
“I guess we are faster than at our best at the end of 2020, but whether that translate into a better performance in the races, that we will have to see”, he added.
