The beginning of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 season is a mere two weeks away, and the final day of testing has concluded.
The early timesheet topper was Juri Vips. The Estonian putting a 1.42.224 in early in the day. Not long after though, his Hitech teammate Liam Lawson bettered the time – just. 0.006 seconds separated the two at the close of the morning session. In the end, it was Marcus Armstrong for DAMS who topped the morning times with a 1.42.173. Fourth was Guanyu Zhou, who was still under a tenth slower than Armstrong. In fact, only half a second separated the top 10 when the morning session ended.
The afternoon session was about playing with the car and doing long, high fuel runs. Almost every driver had run out of fresh tyres for the Bahrain test, so putting in a blistering lap in just wasn’t possible. Campos’ Ralf Boschung was the time topper of the afternoon session with a 1.44.905, almost 3 seconds slower than the morning times. Teammate and newcomer Gianluca Petecof took second in the afternoon with a 1.45.537. The top 3 were completed by Prema driver Robert Schwartzmann.
In the end though, it was Armstrong who’s morning time meant he was the outright fastest after a hard days testing. The teams now go back to base to regroup before the first proper battle comes on March 27.
