FIA Formula 3 race winner Jake Hughes has signed with ROKiT Venturi Racing as a reserve driver for the 2021 Formula E season.
After a mediocre F3 season in 2020, Jake Hughes decided to call it quits for his participation in the Formula 1 feeder series, having secured 7th place in the overall drivers’ championship with HWA Racelab. The experienced Briton added two race victories over the course of the season to his two triumphs in the couple of years he contested prior.
Hughes was also given his first taste of Formula 2 racing at Sochi, Russia last year, running with his F3 team, HWA Racelab after Giuliano Alesi made a mid-season transition to MP Motorsport. He finished twelfth in his debut race in the series, however was unable to finish during his second running.
The 26-year old is now appearing to turn his primary focus to Formula E racing, having been announced as Venturi Racing’s reserve driver just a day before the opening round of the 2021 season commences.
However, Hughes already has some Formula E experience underneath him due to the opportunity to test for the NIO 333 and Mercedes teams in previous years, so this change won’t be entirely foreign to him.
”I’m incredibly excited to join ROKiT Venturi Racing as the team’s reserve driver,” Hughes stated. “I want to say a big thank you to Susie [Wolff] and the team for trusting me with this opportunity.
“I’ve driven Formula E cars in the past, most recently with Mercedes, so I feel ready to do my job.
“I’m looking forward to supporting Edo and Norman this season and I’m excited to help the team make the car as fast as possible while, of course, learning on the way. Formula E is an incredibly exciting championship, and it feels fantastic to be back at a race track.”
Team principal Susie Wolff added: ”The role of the reserve driver is crucial in Formula E especially during these challenging times with the global pandemic.
“Jake has done more than prove his talent and natural ability on the junior single-seater ladder and we’re delighted to welcome him to ROKiT Venturi Racing.”
