MP Motorsport’s final seat has been taken by 17 year-old Tijmen Van der Helm, the young Dutch talent to step up to Formula 3 racing for 2021.

After MP Motorsport revealed just a couple of days ago that Victor Martins and Caio Collet would fill up two of the three seats in the Dutch squad’s 2021 Formula 3 roster, it has now been brought to light that Tijmen van der Helm has secured the final slot.

Van der Helm will be participating in only his third full year in single-seater car racing, graduating from Formula Renault Eurocup to one of Formula 1’s intensely competitive feeder series.

“I am very happy to be a Formula 3 driver with MP Motorsport in 2021,” said Van der Helm. “This will be a very important step in my career, as Formula 3 is the category where the very best young single-seater talents go head-to-head – exactly the place where I need to show what I’m capable of.

“Furthermore, it’s a great prospect to be so close to Formula 1 – seeing and hearing those cars will add something special to each and every race meeting. Moreover, it is great to return to the old nest. I have wonderful memories of my year with MP in the Spanish F4 championship, so if it is up to me, we will create more good memories next year.”

Team principal Sander Dorsman stated: “It’s fantastic news that Tijmen will be driving with us again. I’m looking forward to working together as we did in 2019. With Tijmen, Victor and Caio, our Formula 3 line-up consists of three very fast and talented rookies who will start the season hungry for success.”

The Dutch driver began his full-time single-seater career in 2019, entering the Formula 4 UAE with Xcel Motorsport for two races at the F1 Support Trophy Round in Abu Dhabi. It was a relatively impressive display from the debutant, as he was able to claim a podium and a fastest lap from that first weekend. Van der Helm also raced for the team in the main championship, sweeping up three podiums and a victory across the eight races he contested.

He then transitioned to the Spanish F4 Championship with MP Motorsport that very year, racking up 8 podiums and 156 points to elevate him to 4th place in the championship.

In 2020, he made a switch to Formula Renault Eurocup with FA Racing, bagging a sole podium along with the 45 points that led to his 12th-place finish in the standings. To add to his participations that year, Van der Helm took part in his maiden Toyota Racing Series season in New Zealand. The 17 year-old grabbed another victory alongside a podium, with 84 points to place him 14th.

Tijmen van der Helm will be hoping to prove himself in the upcoming Formula 3 season, with already a few race wins to his name and talent waiting to be unleashed.
